First you need to pick two things which are similar but still have differences. To compare them you are telling what is similar. To contrast you are stating what is different. You could, for instance, compare the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. A comparison would be that they both involved United States lands. A contrast would be that they involved different types of weaponry. I hope this helps.
