No more than getting a pap smear, or having bad cramps. It also depends on your pain tolerance level. I felt it was worth any discomfort, I don't have to think about birth control. Also, I used to have really heavy periods, now I have lighter periods "maybe" 4 times a year.

I suggest this regime its starts 1 month prior to removal to all my patients:

1st week 1 pill orally of evening prime rose
2nd week 1 orally one vaginally at nite time while in bed
3rd week 2 orally 2 vaginally
4th week 3 orally 3 vaginally

40 min before your removal take 500 mg of ibuprofen

The evening prime rose pills help soften your cervix

Getting my Mirena was a piece of cake. I took two Motrin half an hour before my appointment. I have had 5 kids so that may make a difference. I'm very pleased with mine.

No more than a pap and you don't have periods or they are very light. It's great!
