AVG has a free antivirus addition. I've copied their website below. They also have a great antispyware "Ewido." They rival Norton. Try them out. You'll be glad you did so.

I've been in this business for many years, answering this question for over 15 years. Just antivirus software alone will help noone. Protecting from spyware and protecting your IP address are needed first, and that means you'd want to purchase a firewall, antispyware, and antivirus software. Buying an internet security suite combines all three programs and lowers your price. You want free? Try Zone Alarm (free version of firewall), Adaware (free spyware software), and Avast (free antivirus software). This is a great free combo. If you want to pay for the best Suite, I would purchase Zone Alarm Suite. Thats the best and easiest to use, in my opinion. Norton is huge and inneffective. Mcafee misses too much. Good luck!

AOL's Kasperky software has the best detection rates that I know of and it doesn't take up a lot of system resources. One nice feature that I've never seen in any other antivirus program is that by default, if you computer is doing stuff and the cpu goes over a certain threshold, the program will pause all scans until the cpu usage goes back down. Hope this helps.

Grisoft AVG is a very good medium strength, free antivirus. Impedes performance little, if at all. One of the better antiviruses I've used is Panda (pandasoftware.com). I have cleaned up some very nasty problems with panda. Panda does affect the computers performance, especially on start up and shut down. For everyday surfing, within reason of course, AVG will do just fine (grisoft.com)
