It's an astronomical surety the earth will be obliterated by the supernova of our sun in 4.5 billion years, nothing to worry about for us.
There are many forms of extinction you may not have heard of. For example super-volcanoes, the most destructive force on this planet. An eruption would destroy a vast area of land and trigger a nuclear winter. The whole of Yellowstone is a massive super volcano - and it is 40,000 years late in its cycle of eruptions. Scientists have been noticing some strange tectonic activity in the park…
The combined nuclear capacity of the US and Russia is more than enough to kill every human on this planet. Nuclear Holocaust is the stuff of nightmares but the Cuban Missile Crisis showed us how close we can come so easily. But there are little known incidents in which nuclear submarines have been shockingly close to launching, with no crisis elsewhere.
There is also the threat from bacteria and viruses. Bacteria are becoming immune to our antibiotics at a much faster rate than we are discovering new ones. Eventually we will have nothing left to fight them with. Terrorists and leaders of rogue states have long been trying to produce large quantities of tropical viruses, such as Ebola and Lassa Fever. New technology allows these viruses to be engineered to be more contagious, stronger and harder to kill. Their effect on the human body is already terrifying.
The Bible prophesises the end of the world in the Battle of Armageddon. Many scriptures in the Bible describe this event, and give clues to how and when it may happen. Several of them seem to point to a date of 2007 for the return of the Antichrist and the beginning of the Battle. They depict in detail how the Battle will be fought - it starts with an alliance of Arab nations invading Israel.
Millions could also die with rising sea levels. If the Antarctic ice sheet were to melt then sea levels around the world would rise by 55 meters, completely flooding hundreds of large cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo. Now there is a large amount of evidence that the ice sheet is thinning and global sea levels are starting to rise. With the predicted rise in global temperatures over the next century the rate of melting can only increase.
Aliens invasions are the stuff of science-fiction, but could soon become very real. Of all the trillions of other stars in the universe, surely we cannot be the only ones with life. There are numerous ways that aliens could break the light speed barrier; such as worm holes, folding space and 'hyper-space'. There are numerous reasons why an alien race might wish to invade Earth, such as needing new land or resources, or simply doing what we call 'ethnic cleansing'.
New experiments being carried out at a particle accelerator called the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) could have unthinkable consequences. There, and at other such places, scientists are attempting to recreate the big bang - the event that formed the universe. Some predict that they could cause a black hole which would consume the Earth, others that it could turn Earth into a planet of 'strange' matter, leaving it with no substance, and another possibility is that an explosion would be released from the lab with infinite energy.
The most famous example of an event that could cause Armageddon is a Near Earth Object (NEO). This term describes asteroids and comets passing close to Earth. There are millions of these capable of hitting the Earth with apocalyptic force. Impact would cause vast fireballs, huge earthquakes to ripple round the globe and towering dust clouds that would cause a nuclear winter. Apophis will have a near miss in 2029 and a 1 in 300 chance of impact in 2036. Do we have the technology to nudge its orbit a wee bit?

Some of the world ends everyday. Floods, tornado's, hurricanes, fires, tsunamis, earthquakes, car wrecks, plane and train crashes just to name a few. Why do Christians assume this means the whole planet will be destroyed? This is one of the reasons I left Christianity. You even answered part of your own question. Look at the number of people dying all over the world due to the many wars going on at any given time. There seems to be a new disease popping up everyday. People put to much emphasis on THE END. As I said the world ends everyday for someone.

Well I wouldn't know, I'll be dead by then, so at this point, what's the sense worrying about the world coming to an end in this life time? Can we all just get along and enjoy it while it's still here?....LOL.
We already have diseases and alien invasions within our own bodies, now THAT would end anyone's world.

I think the world will end, but it won't be a disease or alien invasion. I believe in what the Bible says in Revelation (the last book in the New Testament) about God destroying this sinful planet. But people will not come to an end, they will live in the Kingdom of Heaven.

I DEFINITLY believe in God, but Do not believe he is the reason the world will end... I study chemistry and science and pollution WILL MOST likely be the end of the world. You can already see the destruction pollution has had on us, by the massive and horrific hurricanes, the flooding, tornado's, typhoons, and much more. OUR existance on this planet WILL most definitly end, and then either a new type of being will arrise from the ashes to repopulate the earth after all balances are restored, or nothing will populate and in a few billion years the sun will destroy it. Nothing is meant to last forever... Sooner or later everything is broken down.

The world will end when the world will want it to end. Everyone will just be waiting for it to end, basically calling out for it. You see, the world is slowly breaking down and eventually it won't be able to breakdown anymore, calling it quits.
Of course, the world that we know only exists in one of infinite number of dimensions. So collectively, the essence of our world will just be born into something else someday in the next dimension, the matter of our world taking a new shape.
Theorists have given these dates, 2010 (meteor hits/beginning of end) and December 12, 2012 ( end of humanity/"rebirth"). Of course, these dates are only speculation. We can help end the world or delay the inevitable by taking care of the world and each other. We must keep the balance of the world or we may not like mother's natures actions.

According to science journals i've read, definite endingof the world is when the sun (which is a star) dies. But not too worry, the sun will be able to continuosly burn for another 5 million years.. By then, if humans are still around, probably we would have migrated to other galaxies or something.
other possibilties could be a huge asteriod hitting earth. or we killing ourselves by drowning the continents through global warming. the ice caps will melt and the rest of the disasters will follow.
Aliens are still contemplating on invading.. is taking them a hell of a long time... probably by the next M.night shyamalan movie... hahaah

Yes. It will be religious zealots pitting their "one true god" against other religious zealots. These idiots will think they will go to heaven anyway and don't really care if the earth survives. When? As soon as Al Quaeda or other some-such delusional scum develops nuclear technology and an ICBM to carry the warhead.
P.S. The sun will burn for another 5 billion years. NOT 5 million years, a thousand times 5 million years. Big difference, except it's a moot point. We'll be lucky to last another 100 years unless we stop breeding, polluting, hating, and worshiping gods.

The World will end in less than 100 years. Either Islamists lauch a global biological attack against: Wheat, Rye, Rice, Oats, Barley, Potatoes, Cows and bulls, Pigs, etc...
Or, Intelligent computers will wipe us out as a species or an
industrial culture.

ive been calculating the distance from the sun for 40 years ,we have now gained 8.5 million miles closer to the sun,at that rate we will be pulled at a very high rate into the sun in the year 2012.the reason behind this is the ort cloud is now producing massive astroids to the the outer gases giants, such as jupiter and saturn, its useless to tell feeble minded people about this
