I am single, 52 yrs of age. I live near Montreal, in Quebec province, Canada. I was thinking of getting a modest place in the west end of Montreal. I have been on social assistance up until June, so that may be a disadvantage if the bank looks at my income report. I know nothing aobut real estate. What are some of the things I should be looking out for so I dont make the wrong decision ?

In the US, most houses for sale are listed with real estate companies. The commission will be the same, whether you are represented (have a buyer's agent) or just call off the sign and have someone from the listing company sell you the house.

You won't save any more money by avoiding a buyer's agent than you save when you get divorced and "..to only pay one attorney, just sign what the other party's attorney tells you to..".

Since correct now there's a purchaser's marketplace, you're in a well function to barter for your self. Anytime any one else is picking out the lender for you, I could be suspect that "hidden landmines" exist. You'll must examine that lender to a couple of you discover your self, adding any pre-approval you've gotten. New Homes have a tendency to be priced greater in the marketplace than pre-owned houses. Compare houses for your subject and paintings intently along with your realtor to look if a brand new house is what you fairly wish. Although we all know the curiosity price will cross up, we do not recognise whilst. Don't be rushed into something with out doing all your homework. Good success.

I don't know about Canada, but in the USA, if you don't know what you are doing you should go through a broker. They should be able to avoid common problems and pitfalls and may even be able to assist in getting the loan or give you other options.

If you know what you are doing, then you can save a lot of money doing things yourself. But, you need to know enough not to make mistakes likely to cause problems later.

Again, this is in the USA, thought I would think the general concept still applies everywhere.
