Funny thing - when I first heard it I was reminded of my first boyfriend ever...when I was about 13. Hadn't seen or spoken or heard anything about him since (I am 30 now, have 2 children and am divorced). Then I did a very little amount of searching (myspace rocks) and I found him. We've been together since and I have never been happier in my life... He is the only ex I'd ever look at "that" way... and now he is no longer an ex. WOO HOO....
But, I do believe the song is about a stranger, not an ex. I think its a little odd to feel THAT strongly about a stranger! I've never experienced love at first sight apparently.

i believe that his song is about a beautiful stranger he seen and knows in reality he will never get a chance in life with that person. this has happened to me, I always see beautiful men and I be like "damn I will marry him at any time..." but I know that will never happen. I'm obsessed with Denzel Washington but I know there is no possible way I will ever get a chance just because of the age difference. That is what I assume he means, and yes that has happened to me several times... and probably everyone else.

Mostly I am glad to get shot of my exes and if I saw them on a train I'd probably move seats, and none of them were beautiful anyway, James Blunt is a d*ck head who dumped his girlfriend via the tabloids for a model. So basically his theory gets blown out the window when you make a bit of money doesn't it?

no, the song is about james blunt's ex girlfriend. i saw an interview where he talked about it. they had just split up and he saw her in a station with someone else and their eyes met and he said it was like they lived a lifetime in that split second. he hasn't seen her since. i think its very sad and im glad it hasn't happened to me.

Of course it has. In fact it happens to a lot of young men and women too. I had a love and we split up. I have never forgotten her or any thing about her. I have missed her so much.
I saw her once several years ago - I wanted to run over to her and hold her and feel her body next to mine (another song). I had to leave because my attraction to her was just to strong.
So, ya it is a horrible feeling - and I will never get over her.

No it has never happened to me but i would love to see James Blunt in person and talk to him .... thank god it had never happens to me before... but thinking it twice it happened to me once but the i realized that that guy was an *** ... hope it never happens to u..

Happened me earlier this year. The one woman I have ever loved & I split up. I used to see her every day & it broke my heart. But through some miracle we have got back together & are happier than ever now.

No, this song is about a girl he saw in a subway station walking with another man. She caught his eye and smiled at him and he went off on a tangent and sang a whole song about the girl whom he doesn't know.
