Start with the resolution passed by Congress, authorizing the President to go to war - it sets out the history, or at least the case made for the war:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/10/20021002-2.html
It's a lot to read, and has a lot of terms you might have to look up, but you could start there. It's the "official" government document.
Also try searching "Iraq War" in Wikipedia or Yahoo History.
Good luck!
PS You weren't even born before the first Gulf War in 1991. I remember it well - I was about 30 then. I feel so old!!! :)

It's very complex but I'll try to summarize it for an 11 year old
President Bush started the war in Iraq because he wanted to bring democracy (a government similar to the United States) to the Middle East. He thought this would help make the area more peaceful and eventually end, or slow down terrorism.
He justified starting the war because Saddam Hussein, the former ruler of Iraq, is a very evil man and President Bush thought that he had weapons of mass destruction that could help terrorists kill a lot more people if they attacked again.
It turns out that Saddam Hussein didn't have weapons of mass destruction. This made the United States look really bad to the rest of the world. It's also turning out that it's really hard to get a democratic government going in Iraq. The people there are trying to start a civil war because they can't agree on how to start a new government.
All of this means that, although President Bush had good intentions about the war, it wasn't right to start it in the first place and in the end it might make the Middle East even more dangerous than before we started the war.

Not simple but i'll try my level best. War on Iraq was launched apparently on the behest of neo-cons’ ( a group of jews in the US administration) wish in order to topple Saddam and weaken Iraq coz it posed a substantial threat to Israel. Second as the US will be not be able to meet the growing energy and oil/gas demands at home, the other object was to occupy the wast oil reserves. The excuse given to the world among other things was theat Saddam Hussain posed to its neighbour and the US wants to expand democracy and that it's part of the ongoing war agaisnt Al Qaeda and that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. All these exuses have been proved wrong. No weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq. The excuse of spreading democracy also falls flat coz if the US loves democracy so much then why the democratically-elected government of Hamas in Palestine is not accepted by the US. All Amercian goals have been achieved in the guise of this war but in the bargain the seems of US ....ss are spliting as Oct. was considered the highest month death-wise for the US army. And now the US has no exit policy. The US marines and local civilians are dying like flies every day. The US has dug its own grave and the more its trying to clime up the more its lowering itself in it, there is no escape from it. All this has been acknowledged by the bigwig of the US politics like vice-president Cheny, defense minister Rumsfeld, ex-defecne minister and US army general Powell and score of other US army generals that Iraq is not an easy target as they thought it out to be, may be worse than Vietnam, acknowledge by no less than the boffon President of the US George W. Bush.

Here's all you really need to know:
1.)The Iraq War is a war of choice, started by President George W. Bush
2.) Mr. Bush gave numerous reasons for starting the war, all of which turned out to be false or outright lies. No one has been able to understand his real reason -- some think it has to do with his daddy
3.) Many American kids have died as a result of Mr. Bush's war. When people say "it's better to fight them over there than here" what they mean is "It is okay to send your kids off to die in a foreign land, as long as mine don't have to go". Mr. Bush did not send his two girls.
4.) Instead of being a better place, Iraq today is a hellhole. Although just about everybody disagrees with him. Mr. Bush says we are winning the war. Most people just laugh when he says that.
5.) Mr. Bush is considered by many to be the worst president in U.S. history. He does not read the newspaper and cannot pronounce the word "nuclear".
I think that's about it, Kiddo. let me know if you have any questions.

Yes. The United States wrongly undertook to over-through the sovereign govern of Iraq under the pretext that they were the terrorists of 911 and that they had weapons of mass destruction. What it was was a grudge that George Bush had against Saddam Hussein and the urging by big oil companies to try to capture Iraqis oil reserves. The war has backfired in that ancient enemies and divisive religious factions have started feuding and we are caught in the middle. The other thing is that we as Americans are no safer against terrorists, probably more in danger of terror attacks. If the excuse of weapons of mass destruction had been true, we would be going after North Korea and Iran now.
