They meet with someone else because that person shows up and professors and advisors don't usually care about schedules.

After waiting, you should have knocked & told him that you were there for your appointment.

One of three things could have happened in regards to your appointment with him. All three could be a strong possibility on what happened.

First, a student from one of his classes or another student he advises showed up without an appointment.

Second, he or his secretary could have over scheduled him for the same time slot.

Or third, the previous appointment took longer than he thought it would and did not leave enough time between appointments in case this happened.

You need to be up front with him that his next availability does not work and then tell him the reason. Advisors do not always remember everyone else's course schedule because they tend to have several people they advise depending on the department size.

If you two can't find another time that works for you two, can you see if you can be scheduled with another advisor within the department?

Good luck!

This happens a lot. You've got to be willing to wait. Undergrads come last on the list of people your professor is going to see - someone else' appointment might have run long, maybe their grad student needed something done, maybe they had a last-minute grant or proposal due. Sorry, but when you're last on the list, you have to be willing to wait. It's like the doctor's office, sometimes.

it's NOT your fault. point that out to him/her. try to schedule with someone else who is higher than your advisor and tell them your side of things.
