This is an interesting question.
I know a lady who was married to a rich man. Had everything imaginable. Trips, cars. homes.
She found out he lied about everything. She chose to leave him. He hid all the money so she wouldn't get any. So, she lived very simple life. Drove a neon. Lived in an apartment. Left all the material things behind and became the person she was suppose to be a long time ago.
She had all sorts of adventures. The kids were grown and she became a kid herself. She developed her art and began to write. She didn't have to be the CEO's wife anymore. She became who she was. She was sucessful in a non material way. Her sucess was measured in the beats of the heart and spirit and not by things, trips and affulence. She met amazing people. Fell in love with eccentric men. Did things that a rich man's wife woud never do.
She experienced life on all levels. She published her work. She showed her art in two galleries. Created a little graphics company.
She traveled the road less traveled.
Got her body and spirt in order.
Her style reflected her artistic side. She grew her hair long. Did things that proper business men's wives didn't do. She could write a book about her adventures.
She feels free and inspired. She had compermised her true self in order to be the wife of a man who never understood her, nor cared. She regrets the years she spent trying to be something that she wasn't. But the important thing is the here and now she is who she is.
The moral of this story is to be who you are from the beginning. Don't marry somoene who changes the core of you. Then allow life to be an adventure no matter what your age it.

Similar to yours. One who was really considered "cool" now real sitck in the mud. One who was a tee totaler and dead set against drinking is an alcoholic. One who was "most likely to succeed" hasn't had a job in years. The hot shot class president who reported friends for cheating is in prison for tax evasion and bribing a public official.
