Nobody really knows. It seems to be genetic, but that's about all that can be said with any real certainty.

Your genetic make-up. A dominant right brain will make a left-hander, a dominant left brain will make a right-hander. Your handedness is generally decided on by which hand you use for fine motor skills, including writing. History has shown that people can be changed from left to right for writing, but they often have very poor handwriting as a result that lasts all their lives.

Genetics, but as always, the environment may influence you. My mom was born left-handed, but wrote with her right hand, and I'm left-handed because no-one bothered me about it.

It depends on which half of your brain is dominant. If the left half is dominant then your right hand will be dominant. That's why they say only left handed people are in their right minds. :)

there is no hard and fast rule over here.the theory is people who are lefty, have right hemisphere of their brain more developed and right handed ones have their left hemisphere more developed. i don't think genetic factors are something that crucial here because, even while all other members of my family are right-handed, i'm a born southpaw. i think it's something more physiological.

Genetics. My husband's whole family is left-handed. Mine on the other hand (no pun intended) is all right handed.
