They don't want to overload their ashtray. Yes, I find it annoying. I have seen people stop their cars and actually dump their ashtrays onto the graound, then take off again. Absolutely gross. It would be a temptation to find out where they live, and dump a bunch of ashtrays onto their front lawn.

I'm guilty, I flick my butts out the window. There's no excuse except while driving and it comes time to butt out it's easier to just toss it rather than try and drive and butt it out in the ashtray at the same time. However, I have never emptied my full ashtray on the street.
To be honest, flicking the ashes out the window is messier than using the ashtray. Ashes blow back in the car. There is no logic except what is easier and what would be best is to just not smoke in the car period.
Yes, it's a dirty disgusting habit but some of us smokers do try and take some form of responsibility for our habit in regards to cleanliness. Some of us do try and clean up after ourselves in our own homes. Our homes are not as messy as you may think.
My Gramma has a tiny one room apartment and she smokes. You would never know it though. There is no smell, she keeps it immaculate.
Yes, I realize I'm contradicting myself because I litter my butts which isn't exactly picking up after myself but I'm trying to say that just because we smoke we are all not dirty disgusting people. I have seen non-smokers houses that are dirtier than mine. I have also seen people throw other things from their car as well (coffee cups, napkins etc). So, it's not just us smokers who are polluting the planet or causing accidents.
I would like to offer my deepest apologies if my butts have ever hit any of your cars and say thanks for pointing out the possible consequences to my actions.

Yes!!! Thank you. Very annoying! I do not get smokers. Not only the ones tossing from their butts out of their cars but the ones just carelessly throwing them on the ground. For example walking up to the door of a store or other business and they get to the door and throw the butt! My gosh just look down in any given parking lot, beach, public park, anywhere! These butts are all over and it is disgusting! We went to Florida this summer and the beach was just one big ashtray. Why do smokers not care about this? Would they just carelessly toss fast food wrappers or paper like this? It is so gross, disrespectful and rude!
And while we're at it. I even hate driving behind someone smoking. Even with my windows rolled up I can smell it.
UGH!
WOW!!! Look at all the thumbs down for everyone. The smokers must be out in force today.

It's extremely annoying to me!! However, I just bought a new car, and there is NO astray in the car. None! So, if someone was a smoker where would they put their butts??? I guess out the window right?? So, the car companies are now forcing the smokers who have new cars to litter, because there is no place for them to put their butts.

Not only is this littering, but I have always been concerned for the driver behind the car doing it. If that lit butt hits an oil or gas spill, its going to ignite, and I don't even want to think of what would happen if the results of that were to hit some body's gas tank.

It is completely annoying and happens way too often. It's inconsiderate. Especially on the ocassion where I was going 70 on the highway and some dip threw his out behind him. I was in a convertible with the top down, I was really glad it hit the car instead of me. Smokers should be more considerate.

Littering is e very bit as disgusting a habit as smoking is. It has to make you wonder what the inside of their homes is like . But, having said that, it's often true that those who are so "meticulous" about their own immediate living environment, can have little or no respect for the environment that others have to be in, or pass through.
Besides the obvious consequences of scattering their trash in the public space of others,. it tells me a lot about the character and personality of the people who do that.. It tells me they are totally irresponsible, inconsiderate, selfish, disrespectful boors, and they are not likely to get on my "friend list" anytime soon.

I totally agree w/you. So many things could come from doing this. I have seen a hay truck on fire, the backseat of the car, brush fires and so many more.
In some states the fine is $300 I think they should make it higher and stricter.

It always seemed odd to me too....sometimes smokers would tip it out the window when with me, because I can't handle smoke very well. I don't know why they do it when they're alone....I guess the secondhand smoke is too strong for them.

They don't even think. How many times has one flew back into the backseat of the car or hit your windshield or you if the window is open. Besides cigerettes are non bio degradable. It's littering. Since most newer vehicles do not come with ashtrays. They should carry something in their vehicle and dispose of them later.
