Run for speed, practice quick cuts, and don't be afraid to drop your shoulder and take a hard hit. Have fun!

Concerning the fact that this is freshman footbal, here are what your coaches are looking for. They want to see some of the obvious things like speed, agility, and power. There are though certain "qualities" that they will be looking for. As a running back. They want you to be able to run the play that is called. If it an ISO play, run the iso play off the guard's butt behind your Fullback and get those tough 3-4 yards. If it is a power play (this is where the Fullback will kick out the Defensive End Off Tackle and you run it there), Don't bounce the thing outside. I would like to see young running backs cut up inside of the Fullbacks kickout block and run that play hard for that 5 or 6 yard gain. Don't run outside unless an outside running play is called ie) sweep, option. In the open field, become your own blocker. Even inside the box, become your own blocker. Your fullback and offensive lineman WILL miss blocks every now and then. Put that head down, gain that leverage and keep churning those legs to move foward. Make the pile go foward, fall foward, and get your team in the end zone
P.S.-As I mentioned before, your offensive line and fullback WILL miss blocks, don't go pointing your finger at them when things go wrong. Just encourage them and put the load on your back and carry your team. No matter what level of football, this is what top quality running backs do.

Speed, speed, and more speed. Must be able to cut on a dime, and have enough power to take a big hit and hold on to the ball. Watch Barry Sanders and Reggie Bush tapes for examples. Also having the ability to catch balls out of the backfield will be huge. If you can get behind some much taller lineman you become very hard to tackle. I also played at 5'6 my freshman year. I was a WR though.

Hopefully any running back would have some combination of strength, quickness, elusiveness, toughness and speed.
I put speed last for a reason. All of the other things can be taught out right speed is more of a God- given talent.
You should be increasing your leg strength on the hip sled and with squats. You should also be increasing your upper body strength as much as possible.
Watch film of Reggie Bush and Barry Sanders and try to copy the moves they put on people.
