I simply don't celebrate the day and want to tactfully keep people from climbing up my stairs to ring my doorbell. Thinking about draping a rope to block entrance up stairs. Is this tacky? In the past, when we turn off lights people still ring our doorbell.

We never went to unlit houses. When one of my parents couldn't stay home, we turned our lights out. Put your cars in the garage (if you have one), or go to Wal-Mart or a bookstore for a few hours. That's the only way to ensure you won't have to deal with kids. Draping a rope is a great idea. Maybe you could add some fake spiders or other embellishements to keep kids out.

I would simply turn off your lights and not worry to much about the occasional ringing of your doorbell. If you do anything more than that you are going to wake up to eggs and pumpkin smashed all over your property. Try to keep the lights on IN the house down to a minimum so it looks like no one is home.

Most people know to go only to houses with a light on. All you can really do is turn yours off....and then don't answer the door. You can also leave your house for the time that the kids are out.

I think you're being a scrooge, though. Let the kids be kids. They have the rest of their lives to be adults. Halloween is a fun day for kids to get dressed up and go door to door for candy. It's nothing more to them. Why take that fun away from them because you're not interested????

I assume you want to be subtle, so I assume a "No trick or treat please" sign is out of the question.

A "Resting, please do not disturb" sign might be good.

If you don't want people to ring the doorbell, the you might want to temporally turn off or remove the doorbell or find a way to silence it. Ask people you know if they want to visit, they need to make an appointment first and ring your telephone once they arrived.

Making the house look empty or filled with sleeping people might be good, but that might attract another kind of crowd like thieves or vandals.

If I were you I would find something else to do, go to a movie or coffee shop or something. Kids are the most enthusiastic people you'll find, it is sincere, raw enthusiasm and those that do trick-or-treat have no concept of the fact that, "What do you mean there are people who don't celebrate it?" You know what I mean? Kids are very egocentric and can't imagine that there are any people out there who...gasp...don't want to give them candy. I'd high tail it out of there, especially if you live in an apartment complex, cause the minute even one child sees you...you'll suddenly have fifty bags shoved in your doorway. Hope that helps even a tiny bit.

My family began leaving the lights off, and going out for dinner and a movie.

There are no young children in the family, and most of the neighborhood is rowdy teens and college kids.

It's a child's celebration;
as much fun for them as adults.
It's the only time of the year that these
kids can actually enjoy their
neighborhoods..
Give them a chance at fun!
Fun / quality time with their
parents, too.
giving these children a piece of
candy is not going to hurt your
wallet...For once, think back at
the good times you had as a child..
A good person giving you a piece of
candy, is / was a plus!

All I ever did was to turn the porch lights off. Oh, it does help to put a sign that says, No candy, go away!

just put out a bowl of candy. that way, people wont egg you or pulla prank on you, but you wont have to deal with people ringing your doorbell.

Tape a sign to the bottom of the bowl that says you're all out of candy so when you do actually run out, trick or treaters will think its their fault for getting there too late
