The PC in question has an HDD of 37GB (25GB free space), 1.73 GHz Processor and 128MB Ram. On Startup , it doesn't give me any icons, and I have to make them appear throughthe task manager. It also takes an inordinate amount of time to boot up completely. I have seen something called a Sony Picture Package that seems to be causing the problem. Also the HDD is not FAT formatted, but NTFS. When closing down, the PC gets to a level where it tells me it is shutting down, but immediately begings starting up again. In contrast, I have another PC which only has a 20GB HDD (13 in use), 144MB RAM and a 1GHz Processor which works faster than the one mentioned above. Can anyone help me out?

NTFS is newer and better in almost every respect than FAT. I doubt that is the source of your problem.

Drivers, drivers, drivers. Boot into safe mode by hitting f8 when you see the bios screen. it should boot to windows and then remove the offending programs, also download the latest drivers for your motherboard, video, audio etc. If you see no icons that is a problem with explorer.exe or better a lack of it. You probably have somthing booting up and failing just before explorer. Also try installing an anti virus program and doing a complete scan. Also you can right click on the hardrive and go to properties then tools and do error checking on the drive. Good luck!

You are woefully lacking in RAM to try to run any program that uses a lot of RAM. You should have at least a gig. NTFS is the preferable format.

you might want to try re-installing and creating a new partition with FAT32 or whatever since the computer only has 37 GB.

The thing is, NTFS should work okay with that size hard drive, but you could always try FAT like I said before.

Boot up in safe mode and see if its faster. If so, then you have something loading up in memory that is buggy or hoggin or a virus or spyware.
