In some areas - and for certain crimes - this is very common. The best, quickest and cheapest way to find out is to ask the court clerk, who will either tell you - No, we don't do that - or will probably tell you that you would need to appear before the judge and ask him or her. I do not know what Phoenix House is - perhaps some kind of rehab center, half-way house, etc? If he is there, under someone's supervision, they may be able to point him in the right direction also. It has been my experience over the years in hearing others talk about getting "community service" instead of paying hefty fines for something that it can save you "big bucks" and also do a lot of good. I hope that this is the case with your son - wish you and him well.

At the time of the sentence the offender may ask the judge to order community service in lieu of fine.
You may re-approach the court with the specific paperwork (case & docket #) and see if it is possible to convert to community service.

Go to the courthouse and ask the court clerk whether it is possible. The ultimate decision will almost certainly need to be made by a judge of the court.
