You can go to Michaels or HObby lobby and find a lot of cutesy things... Like wooden letters, shelves, butterflies, stuff like that can go on the baby's wall, and get some craft paint and paint them...
or you can make some scrapbook pages.. those will last forever too...
get a plain piggy bank and decorate it....
You can make something for her materials in all for around 10-15 bucks or cheaper.

You can make this for less than $5.
Make a diaper bag out of a placemat. I make purses out of placemats all the time as gifts. People love them.
Find an appropiate good weight placemat on clearance. Embellish with ribbons, trims, buttons, rick rack, etc. across short sides. Fold short edges right sides together. Stitch. To make a flat bottom, take a bottom edge and open seam and match to bottom center line till you have a point. Measure 2 inches in from point and stitch across making triangle. Repeat on other side. Turn right side out.
For handles use 1 yard gross grain ribbon 1 inch wide in coordinating color. Cut 2 pieces 18 inches long with pinking shears. Mark center top of bag then measure over 3 inches on each side for placement of ribbon. Stitch in place on inside or knot edge of ribbon and stitch on outside. I usually add a decorative button to front of bag at center. If you want to get fancy buy wooden handles from a store like Joann's
and attach them to bag with gross grain ribbon.
This makes a great dressy small diaper bag to take to church or out to eat, etc. Fill bag with a few goodies for new baby. I love making these. Let your imagination run wild!

I second the quilt, especially one of those felty flannel ones where you just tie the sides. They're great for playing on the floor too.
Another thing, would be to get one of those baby photo albums, or make ones, and include photos of the mom, dad and grandma.
Also Michaels has these plastic photo cubes for about $1. You could put family or any kinds of pics in there. They work great for blocks too.
Other things new moms appreciate too our frozen meals and offers to babysit!

A Boppy pillow. My son is now 2, and I still use the pillow for things like diaper changes and as a travel neck pillow for myself on long trips. It works during and after pregnancy, and it has so many uses for baby too.

I agree with Beach -- If your wanting it to be long lasting and you actually make the thing, the quilt is a great idea. When you go to the fabric store you can check out the books for more ideas -- they are free to look at.

Get something personalized. You can Cd's with songs where they insert the baby's name. Or maybe a piggy back with her name painted on it. She can keep these forever.

I made a latch hook rug for my niece before she was born. They aren't that expensive, depending on the size, and are very easy to make!
