2006 CE or 2006 AD means 2006 years after the birth of Christ (CE starts the same but stands for Common Era for political correctness). AD stands for "anno Domini," Latin for "year of our Lord." People argue that since there was no year zero the millenium didn't come until 2001. That's really pointless since scholars think the date is wrong anyway and Jesus Christ was born some time before that.

The Earth has been going around for more than 2006 years (even if you're one of those loons who think's the bible says it's only existed for something like 10,000).

Our calender years are of course different from sidereal years (essentially how long it truely takes for Earth to move once around the sun). Tropical years are shorter than sidereal years but longer than typical callender years and this is bases on the appearent position of the sun. This is why we have leap years (and periodically skip them): so that our observations of the sky are not "off" simply because we rounded off the number of days.

Over time these become fairly accurate, although over a very long period of time other things like the moon's affect on the Earth's orbit will change the accuracy of these measurements.

This year, 2006, simply means we appear to have gone around the sun (it has come to the same point in the sky) 2006 times since Christ was thought to have been born (although we no longer think that date is accurate).

For all practical purposes it is primarily just used to compare (2006-1985=21: I'm 21 years old) (or it's been __ years since the __war) (or the internet has been around for __ years) etc.

It's 2006 AD. The AD stands for 'Anno Domini' (Which means 'year of our Lord'. It's a Latin thang, Dawg)

You may have heard of dates that were given as 'BC'. The 'BC' means 'Before Christ'

Got a clue yet?
