KINGDOM COME, BATMAN: RED RAIN (Bats becomes a vampire), SUPERMAN: SPEEDING BULLET. (Superman grows up as Bruce Wayne instead of as Clark Kent). KINGDOM COME features the Justice League in a near future scenario where a new breed of heroes become too aggressive, and Superman and the Justice League step in to set things right. There's a lot more to this story, and the fight scene between Capt. Marvel and Superman is worth the price alone! Great story, great art! also, BATMAN; GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT is great, and features Mike Mignola's artwork (Hellboy creator/artist). Good luck!

here are some of the Elseworlds comics i've read.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - is a Batman in the victorian age story

JLA: The Nail - what if superman had never appeared? what if the JLA had been formed without superman? the sequel to this is JLA: another nail. just in case you haven't heard the short story, here it is...

For want of a nail the shoe was lost,
for want of a shoe the horse was lost,
for want of a horse the knight was lost,
for want of a knight the battle was lost.
So it was a kingdom was lost - all for want of a nail.

Superman: Speeding Bullets - what if Kal-El was batman instead of superman?

Superman: Red Son - what if Superman grew up in the Soviet Union and became it's leader?

Kingdom Come - the old JLA tries to stop the new generation of more violent hero's.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - an old bruce wayne fights back against a world where crime reigns, there are no superhero's, and superman works for the US government.

Superman: Secret Identity - world where superhero's exist only in comic books, it chronicles the life of a guy named Clark Kent who suddenly recieves the abilites of a superhero.

Batman and Dracula: Red Rain - batman becomes a vampire and fights dracula. the sequels are also about vampires (Batman: Bloodstorm, Batman: Crimson Mist)

Batman: The Blue, the Grey, and the Bat - batman and robin during the civil war.

Superman: A Nation Divided - superman during the civil war

Justice League: Act of God - what would happen if all superpowered individuals lost their powers?

The Superman Monster - think frankenstein monster with superman abilities.

Superman: Last Son of Earth - what if it was earth that was doomed and they sent the last son of earth (clark kent) to krypton?

Superman: Distant Fires - nuclear holocaust kills everyone except the superheroes who have lost their powers.

Batman: Scar of the Bat - batman during the 1920, fighting mobsters.

Batman: Reign of Terror - batman during the french revolution.

Superman & Batman: Generations (Vol. I, II, III) batman and superman aging in real time starting when they first met in the early 1930's.

JLA: Destiny - a version of the JLA where Thomas Wayne created the JLA and batman and superman never existed.

Batman " speeding bullet" Superman Red Son
Without ruining the ending Bullets looks at what if the Rocket from Krypton had landed outside Gotham City. While Red Son looks at what if Superman had landed in the Soviet Union. Both are excellent reads. You might also want to check out Kingdom Come a story about the possible future of our heroes.

Gotham by Gaslight is one of my favorites. It's Batman set in Gotham of the Victorian era (his parents were killed by a highwayman just after the Civil War) and Batman fights Jack the Ripper.
