Bear in mind Afghanistan is not like the stereotypical image of the middle east. It's not a wide, flat sandbox. It is a hard, mountainous land. There are all sorts of little spider holes to get lost and stay lost in. Throw in with that the fact that many tribal cultures within said land, possess an intimate knowledge of it and hold some sympathies with OBL.
No one should kid themselves that it was going to be easy.

Think about it. Its where he comes from, its where he gets most of his funding from, it has good medical facilities (he has renal failure and is dependent on dialysis) and its the one country he knows the US won't attack (too dependent on oil).
I also think the US knows this but aren't doing anything because having a frightend population makes them easier to control.
