Well, Bex has the right stats but we need to have a serious luck. The census found that the vast majority of these 'christians' were personal believers at best, traditionalists at worst. The 'real' Christians dont make up that big a percentage of our population.
I think Britain as a nation is becoming more and more aware of the threat of Extremist religion. We've always been wary of an overbearing Zealot religion, since Henry VIII created the CoE.
NB
GirlAfraid, we have no 'state religion'. The two were separated long ago. We have an official church, the CoE, but no State Religion
Raymo, im not wrong friend, henry split from the Catholic Church in the Act of Supremacy (1534), calling himself head of the Church of England. Edward VI, his successor, reinforced the PROTESTANT principles. It has retained Catholic traditions and forms of Governance, but it is not Catholic

Britain is a Christian country because we have an official state religion, which is Christianity. Simple as that really. It's not supposed to be a reflection on the number of people who go to church.

I can't give a definitive answer on this one as I don't have the relevant statistics, but I would presume that the ratio of atheists to christians would have been recorded in the most recent census. So while it may well be the case that atheists are on the up, they are perhaps still outnumbered by Christians.

I always think of Britain to be traditional (like what we see in movies portraying 'olden' days). I guess you can picture British accents right along-side the CAtholic Church. When more movies come out showing British accents along-side Atheism is when I'll start relating the two.

Because we still have a national religion - the Church of England. I have read that recent surveys show that although congregations are falling, a belief in God (or other supreme being) is the majority view and rising.

My info is the same as Bex, over 70% of the British population consider themselves to be Christian.
Another contributor got his facts wrong in saying that Henry VIII created the Church of England. He did no such thing. Henry VIII declared himself Head of the Catholic Church in England. Both the Church and Henry were Catholic.
Please will contributors check their facts before making silly comments.

People here in the UK prefer to stay at home and watch telly than get twisted out of money by a religious nutter!
