An automatic? Like in automatic first down?

That's when the offense gets a first down due to a penalty, regardless of whether or not they have earned the necessary ten yards from the original line of scrimmage.

A good example is the illegal contact penalty. You get five yards for the penalty, and a new first down.

It means no matter how much yardage the play made or lost. Because of the penalty the offense is getting a First Down.

Automatic first down is when the penalty makes it so that there's no other recourse but to give first down due to the severity of said penalty.
