Because candy if fun and yummy to eat. Yes vegetables are better, but if you take candy away from a kid, when they get older that is all they will eat. You got to let kids have a little candy sometimes.

Because they are children. My children go to our church's Harvest Festival on Halloween. We get tons of Candy. I let them pick their favorite things (a good amount) and then we send all the extras to Daddy's office. My children get ONE piece of candy per day. It lasts forever. I have been very lucky that my children like fruits and veggies and we provide balanced meals for them so I know they get enough. It's just a fun tradition to get candy. Moderation is the key. Some parents just don't know or care what that is.

Some years ago there were several places where children got things like razor blades in fruit...soooooo..parents grew concerned enough that may police departments and hospitals inspect candy for free and LOTS of places have parties and no trick or treating for the kids OR they only go where the parents know the people...

Because candy can be bought at the store in factory sealed bags and you don't have to worry about needles or drugs being in them and candy is less expensive If my child got fruit or veggies I would throw it away. Anyway its a treat. Fruits and veggies they get every day Candy they seldom get.

Because candy won't spoil like fruits and veggies will, the kids would not be able to eat them fast enough to keep fresh. Besides it's only once a year, let them have their candy!!

Hey the kids would love that, why don't you hand out some fruit and veggies for Halloween. Oh, and some raw eggs would be good too, I am sure they would really appreciate those. Good luck and enjoy the happy kids coming to your house.

because candy tastes better, and its the whole reason for going trick-or-teating. Sadly, the houses who give out fruit are usually given the label of being 'lame'... I know apples and oranges are better for you, but on Halloween the kids just don't care lol

I used to get apples, boxes of raisins, oranges, popcorn balls, potato chips, corn chips, fruit roll-ups, oatmeal cookies, and the usual candy. Kids want candy but I always liked getting the apples or boxes of raisins. Didn't you have people who put razor blades in apples in your neighborhood? That is what we heard and you would always hear of kids getting cut up biting into an apple or candy with pins, broken glass, or razor blades in them. Different things cruel people did. It was always told to have an adult check all the candy before letting the kids eat it so they would not get hurt.
