Audible
A play called by the quarterback at the line of scrimmage to change the play that was called in the huddle.

The coach calls in the play and the QB shares that when they huddle up; but once the QB gets a look at the defense, he makes a different call (an audible) since he thinks the original call will not work given the defense. For example, if the QB reads the defense as a possible blitz (many defensive players on the line of scrimmage), he will want to make a call in which he gets rid of the ball quickly by either handing it off to a running back or throwing a quick throw to the tight end since there will probably not be enough time for him to go back to throw and make all his reads to see which WR would be open.

An audible is when the QB calls a play at the line of scrimmage. A QB will use audibles to call plays in a no-huddle offense or he call an audible to change a play.

The QB comes to the line and is under center but sees the defense is a certain way that would not allow the offensive play to be successful. So he says some things to his offensive mates and changes the play to something better.
