Hallowe'en has only really been around in its present form for 80 years. Prior to about 1920 something called mischief night was important (probably) from Scottish immigrants to the US, where they'd take gates off hinges or swap shop signs around, harmless pranks. However it started getting nasty with livestock being injured etc, so there was a campaign to make hallowe'en 'sane' - children who behaved were rewarded with sweets - so hallowe'en hasn't really been around for ages at all. All Saint's (or souls) day was moved from May to November a while back in the Church's history, because the pagans had a similar holiday in October/November, so the church saught to combine the two in order to stamp out the pagan festival (called samhain)
As for banning it there isn't any point at all, what are they going to do to people who 'celebrate' it? Put them in prison for being dressed a certain way? People who made trouble would be punished just as much as they would be if hallowe'en WAS banned anyway, so why not keep it?

I grew up in a strongly conservative house where halloween wasnt observed. I never went trick or treating or had a costume while I was a child. But my stance is who cares it's just a Holiday. The same people who go crazy or are just wierd are probably that way everyday anyway. Plus bring on the candy bar. BOOOOOOOOOO!

Although I think it is a pagan Holiday, I did participate by taking my child door to door to collect candy. I do believe that when this Holiday was incorporated into our society it was made to distort the real meaning of this Holiday and make it fun. If you looked up the real history of Halloween and witchcraft it would scare you. I don't think this country would ever ban Halloween because of religious beliefs are to each his own, but I wish they would.

GASP! Ban Halloween? Methinks some people are uptight...
Halloween isn't just for kids. It's a chance to be hilarious, or to be sexy. Adults and teenagers can dress as slutty as they want to, but they don't get into trouble or be called a pevert because it's HALLOWEEN. It's also a chance to slip into someone else's shoes and try being someone else for a while.

The people that want to ban it are usually saying so due to it's anti-religious meaning.
I think kids enjoy if for the free candy and dressing up as their favorite characters. Let the kids have fun!

Your colleagues are seriously up tight. What kind of place do you work at, where everybody has mental problems? Halloween is an ancient human tradition. The people who want to ban it are probably against all just-for-fun celebrations. Screw them!

I think it's a good idea. Not only because the kids get candy, but because they get to use their imagination and be who they want to be for just a day. They can impersenate that character, person, or whomever they are to the best of their ability. It's all for the kids. Although, being 19, i'm still going!! hehehhe

Awwww...are your collegues bitter b/c they, like Charlie Brown, got rocks instead of candy when trick-or-treating?
I love Halloween and now my children are into it and I am glad they like it. They have the rest of the year to be serious and themselves. Why not indulge them for one...count 'em(or it)...one night and let them be whoever or whatever they want to be while getting..hello..FREE candy in the process.
I think it keeps the,"life's not fairs" away b/c anyone can trick-or-treat! Happy Halloween!
