The Big Apple is the nickname for the city and The Empire State is the nickname for the actual state of New York.

Not a weird question at all, my friend! The nickname of New York State is, indeed, The Empire State, and the motto, which is seen on the state flag, is Excelsior, which means 'ever upward'. The City is called the Big Apple, but New York State is one of the largest producer of Apples in the USA! NYS has more apple hybrids to its credit than any other state!

Do you want the informal nickname or the common one? Because the informal one is "The Big Apple", but the formal nickname is "The City Full Of Crime, Pollution, Traffic, Drug Traffic, Murder, Rape, Petty Thievery, And Otherwise Nasty Behavior"
P.S I am not making this up, check the congress website: www.congressofamerica.net
