Example :
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66 GHz)
vs
AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-52(1.6GHz/512KB)

they are both 1.6GHz but what is really the difference??

This is not an answer to your question, but: it's highly unlikely that you'll notice the difference in speed, unless you run benchmarks.

Then the only interesting differences are
- AMD being a bit better, but producing a little bit more heat
- AMD being quite a lot cheaper
- AMD being the likable bunch, and Intel being the money mongering business machine.

As someone else already pointed out: without AMD's competition computers would be a lot more expensive today. If you have the power to decide, please go for AMD and support David against Goliath. :-)

The Intel chip is faster at the same clock speed.

The chip is only part of the performance. Motherboard design is important, as is the OS. Windows is slow and insecure. Buying a fast machine may end up processing viruses extra quickly while slowing down the user experience and flooding the internet with junk mail. If you really want performance, start looking at alternative operating systems. Same goes if you want less expensive. You're better off paying a little more for a box that won't cost you a ton more later on.

AMD being the little guy has to be just a little bit better. Intel has tyhe name like sony If it wasn't for AMD, computers would cost three or more times as much. Intel is not in business and not a benevolent groupe. The only other chip maker is Motorola the maker of apple computer processor. And you know what jerks apple are.

The difference is in name brand. Intel markets itself better.

Intel chips also run slightly cooler than AMD chips, which can affect lifetime, although chances are you'll never notice a difference.
