and for those who don't know what a B-movie is, think such gems as "Plan 9 from Outer Space", "Evil Dead", "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", and "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"... these are some aweful movies... yet i love to watch them (they make me laugh!) why do these movies facinate so many people?

Bad movies are just like cheesy music and horrible Saturday morning cartoons, and are a close relative to Twinkies and Slim Jims - they're guilty pleasures.
Part of it is the comedy - the best humor isn't played for laughs, and most B-movies aren't originally shot for laughs. There's a great quote in a recent episode of "Studio 60." An actress says to the head writer, "I got a laugh when I asked for the butter at the table read, but not at dress rehearsal. What'd I do different?" The writer replies, "You asked for the laugh." "Well, what'd I do at table?" The writer's astute answer? "You asked for the butter." When shooting for funny, actors, directors, and writers are often self-conscious, trying too hard and missing the mark - particularly when the actors, directors and writers are of the low-budget variety. In those situations, you shoot for serious and find funny somewhere between the overacting and the screw-ups.
Part of it is the realization that there, but for the grace of God, goes us. We enjoy "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," because it shoots so far outside the realm of possibility. It's easy to enjoy because there's no attempt to make it look real (or if there is an attempt, it's so poorly executed as to appear as though there wasn't). "Independence Day" looks a little too real - it doesn't require as great a stretch of the imagination to make it happen. You have to work harder at a B-movie. If you're going to believe that Santa Claus is actually going to conquer the Martians, then you have to WANT to believe it, because the director is not going to do a very good job MAKING you believe it.
And, finally, part of it is, I think, a sense of thrift. I mean, how can you not enjoy something you pick up for $.99 out of the bargain DVD bin?

Plan 9 from outer space must be one of my favourite films as well!!

I love the Bela Lugosi "non-lookalike" who walks around with his cape over his face, and the so outrageously gay space ship commander.

Films like that actually transcend bad, they have moved so far round the circle, they come back to great again. I think it is because they are played so straight. the people in them and making them actually believed this was art. They didn't play it for laughs.

I was watching the first 2 "Toxic Avenger" movies the other night & wondering the same thing.

I think it's because we watch them & think "hey, that could be us in that movie!" They just seem relateable in some way, unlike the glam of zillion dollar budget Hollywood. It's like something we would create in our basement & probably has more outtakes then actual good film. You gotta love that common touch!!

"Killer Tomatoes" One of my favorite B movies!!! "puberty love"
I like them because you can sit and make fun of them, laugh at the cheesy special effects, and takes you back to your childhood when you first saw them.
