They occur when the Earth passes through a debris field with an orbit that crosses the planet's. The small rock fragments enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up there, causing the sudden flashes of the meteors that we gather to watch. Most meteor showers are caused specifically by debris fields left in the wake of comets, and the showers are most intense when the comet has passed by recently because the comet replenishes the material.

Meteor showers are debris left over from past comet travels. And on a regular basis the earth goes through these remnants of hevenly visitors. This is why they happen at the same time every year. The earth travels thru the clouds of rock and we see them as meteors.
