Read more books, play chess and eat more marmite. Finally consider if what you are doing whilst you mind wonders off, isn't boring the hell out of you!

Just from personal experience, I can (almost) assure you that you're not going mad, you've just got a lot going on. Also from personal experience, I can tell you that the most effective way for ME (results not guaranteed for non-me individuals) to handle a mind that wants to wander is to let it. (If you can. If you're an airline pilot, doctor, nurse, soldier, etc. - PLEASE do not follow my advice. On the other hand, if you're a book publisher, it's not like lives are resting on your ability to concentrate.) When you find yourself wanting to drift, there might be a reason for it. Make a note of what you're working on, so that you can come back to it later, and then go do something different for a bit. If your brain seems to be devoting its energy to worrying about tonight's dinner, make up a quick shopping list, or call and make a reservation - then go back to what you were working on. If your brain keeps popping up "Christmas shopping!", jot down a few gift ideas. Appeasing that little bit of Adult ADD we all have inside of us can be an effective way to keep it mollified - and keep it from popping up quite so often.

I do that. Just concentrate on what you are doing. Write yourself a note so you don't forget. Read more. You can train your brain to remeber things better. Several substances can boost memory through various mechanisms.
Mental stimulation improves brain function and actually protects against cognitive decline, as does physical exercise.

You can train yourself to concentrate on the job on hand if you want to! 'Wandering off' in bright people is down to boredom with the job in hand. You are not losing your marbles! Au contraire!

Are you talking to yourself? That's the 1st sign of madness, with the 2nd being when you get a response! Yikes..

there is a set period that you can concentrate for and certain times make it harder to do that, like after a meal because your body is trying to digest the food and you cant do two things together as well as one. if you get my meaning

You are probably board with whatever you are doing or reading. Find something that you are really interested in then read about it.
