It may be gout- gout results from deposits of needle-like crystals of uric acid in connective tissue, joint spaces, or both. These deposits lead to inflammatory arthritis, causing swelling, redness, heat, pain, and stiffness in the joints. It could also be bursitis of the toe which is caused by excessive pressure and repetitive movements causing the inflammation of bursa.
The best thing to do is take some anti-inflammatories and if the pain persists go to your doctor.

If you are a teenager or early twenties, it could be Freibergs disease.

If you are drinking heavy, gout.

If you have knocked it, a joint capsulitis.

Best advice for treatment, paracetamol, avoid heeled shoes, and wear a flat shoe, with an enclosed heel and a stiff sole, so your toes cannot flex.

If Freibergs, get it x-rayed and seek advice.

It might be gout. Have th toe checked, and blood tests taken to confirm gout or rule it out. Gout can be controlled by diet, medication and weight loss. It may be osteoarthritis, in the joint especially if you traumatised the joint in the past.(e.g. broke the bone etc.), Osteoarthritis usually starts in your 40's (ocasionally 30's). antiinflamatories help, as well as weight loss. Get it checked as their are other causes.
