I really try to focus, but usually half way through the conversation i begin to think about what i am going to say next to add to the conversation. But i truely try to act like i'm into it all, i nod, say unhun, and try to ask clarifying questions.

Listening and retaining as much of the information communicated is the end result of being actively focused on your subject. In order to do that you must actively listen and take notes if necessary.

Attentive listening means thinking and acting in ways that connect you with the speaker. While active listening usually happens naturally when we are very interested in what someone is saying, we can also choose to listen actively whenever we want to maximize the quality of our listening, both in terms of the effect it has on us and the effect it has on those we are speaking to. By contrast, when people "multi-task" while someone speaks, they rarely listen effectively.

Don't pretend by nodding your head. Don't fake it. Don't be afraid to ask for a better explanation.
