6 factors to 2 and 3
9 facts to 3 and 3
3 appears the greatest number of times
thus 3 is the Greatest Common Factor

No, the largest they have in common is 5*7=35. You need to multiply all the prime factors that are common. Otherwise you only have the largest common PRIME factor.

It's just what the name implies. Factor each term and find the *largest* factor that they have in common. e.g.
3*3*5*7* = 315
5*7*13 = 455
so the GCF of 315 and 455 is 7
