Do you get sharp pains in the vaginal area when you begin to dilate? i am 37 weeks and i have started losing my mucous plug. i won't be checked to see if i've dilated until 38 weeks but i would like to know sooner. i have been having some painful braxton hicks contractions that are keeping me up at night and i have been using the bathroon more frequently throughout the night. could these be signs of labor?

I ached without dilating but if you lost your plug and are having contractions they might not be Braxton-Hicks. Call the doc and go to L&D to be checked. Remember no sex and no baths(just showers) after you loose your plug.

That's what happen to me before I had my son, I was going to the Dr. every two weeks and she checked me one week and I had not dilated at all.....So between that visit and the next visit I had REALLY BAD Braxton hicks contraction some of them I thought was the real thing...I started to spot...my back hurt really bad. So the last two weeks and 4 days of my pregnancy with my son was so it felt never ending pain. When I went to the doctor for my next visit I had dilated all the way to 3 1/2 cm and she told me that I would not make it to my next two week appointment, and after seeing her that day it took me 4 more days until the real thing happened. I didn't have sharp pains, but I know several women who did. Those can all be signs of early labor, but keep in mind that early labor can last for quite a while, weeks even. Time your contractions, and above all else, if u feel that u need to be checked, go in! They would rather send you home knowing that everything is ok, as apposed to having you at home stressed out or in labor without medical help. Frequency of urination can be caused by labor or by the baby pressing on the bladder, and at the end of a pregnany it can, and usually is, both. Best wishes to both of you

It's hard to tell the difference between Braxton Hicks and real contractions sometimes, but the best thing you can do is to call the doctor just in case.
It's better to be safe than sorry..especially when it comes to stuff like this. Good luck and congrats on the new little one :-)

Since you are losing your mucus plug I would go to the hospital and get checked and call your doctor too. It might just be braxton hicks but why wait to find out, especially if its real labor? I know my doctor encouraged me to come in ANYTIME. Hospitals are use to false alarms and will think nothing of it if it ends up being nothing.

It was hard for me to tell the difference in braxton hicks and regular contractions. They both hurt! Best thing to do is to monitor your contractions. If they are REGULAR, then it could be labor. If they are irregular, then they are probably just Braxton Hicks. Good luck to you.

Yes they could be true labor pains. And go to your doc. Although you aren't "scheduled" to get checked until 38 wks, ob-gyns know that babies don't follow "schedules". the doc will check you for signs of dilation. Good luck.
