Wrong. They are not proper nouns and should not be capitalized.

I taught 3rd grade for several years. The students knew that if they capitalized a word that was not a proper noun I would mark it wrong. Not only did I discuss this with them during the week before the test, but also right before the test.

It depends on the teacher. I remember when I was in 1st grade I got a zero on a spelling test that I spelled most of the words right. I capatalized them all, so they were counted wrong. If they were capatalized on the test and were not supposed to be, that could be a reason that they are counted wrong.
If that is not the reason I don't know why they would be counted wrong. I suggest giving the teacher a call just as an interested parent.

Indeed so, they would be wrong.

In my school, we were taught whether or not words should be capitalized fairly early, like 1st grade.

I mention my school's teachings so that I can tell you why they are wrong. The only time a word other than "I" is capitalized is when it appears at the beginning of a sentence or is a proper noun. Neither of the words name and thing are proper, and neither occurred at the beginning of a sentence.

In the end, both words were capitalized, making them incorrect.
