My baby is 4 weeks....all she does is sleep. THe doctor says its ok but I don't think so. All she does is sleep, maybe 15 hours a day. She'll wake up to eat and then fall right back asleep. I want to wake her up but then again I don't. During Family pictures she slept through the whole thing. Loud Noises don't even wake her up..... What to do??

Babies sleep a lot during there first weeks of life. There is nothing abnormal about babies sleeping 14 hours a day. My son is 5 months old and never takes naps!!! If he does its for 10 minutes twice a day but he sleeps 12 hours a night. Just let her sleep and enjoy it while it lasts because soon enough she will start to be awake more and more.

I think at this age its normal for a baby to sleep this much. As the baby gets older the baby will probably have more awake hours. A good book to get to know about some of this stuff is: What To Expect The First Year.

i understand your concerns, but this is normal, as long as she wakes up very 2-4 hours hungry, she is fine. growth occurs during sleep. some babies have a hard time sleeping and wake up with even the slightest noise. did your newborn have a hearing screen when she was born? this is pretty much standard everywhere nowadays. if she didn't get one, make sure she does, because hearing loss in people should be addressed from the start for the best outcome. she probably did have an infant hearing screen, in which case they would have told you what to do if she failed it. but ask the doc to be sure. lots of people think a baby can't do a hearing screen, but that is wrong, it is based on brain waves. if your babe has normal hearing and sleeps through loud noises that is good, usually, then you don't have to tiptoe around and hush everyone, some moms get really upset about waking their sleeping baby! your'e talking to an r.n., who has worked with newborns, sick/and well, and babies for the last 15 years. babies are born with their personalities, although the environment can affect their normal development for the good or bad. having a baby that sleeps well, and is healthy, eats well, is wonderful. look up the word 'colic' and you will feel very lucky. your concern is normal, although. talk to her doc when you go for your next visit, he/she will probably reasure you. if baby sleeps through feeding times, then you should call her doc immediately. this is a sign of something wrong, and should not be ignored. all babies need a lot of sleep, and at birth, most sleep 23 out of 24 hours. this is normal, your babies weight will double by 6 months of age, and triple by 1 yr. it takes a lot of sleep for all this growth. but soon, your baby will become more awake each day, at six weeks of age, baby is still very sleepy, but may stay awake longer than he/she did at birth, at 2-3 months you will notice an increase in her/his awake peroids. when baby is 4-5 months, he/she will probably be taking a morning nap, and an afternoon nap, then about 9 months or so may start to skip the morning nap, but sleep longer in the afternoons.
remember, your baby needs all this sleep to be healthy. baby will be awake and playful when he/she is older. take advantage of your precious little one, and rock her/him while she/he sleeps if you want time with baby. your concerns are normal, and lots of parents think its not normal, that babies sleep so much. sounds like you have a good baby. some babies are very hard to console, and scream loudly at the drop of a pin when awakened by a sound! happy mothering to you, have fun with your bundle of joy and always ask when you are not sure. better to be on the safe side with the little ones.

Babies sleep a LOT their first few weeks, it's when they grow. Don't worry about it. As long as she's waking up long enough to eat and gaining the right amount of weight, she's fine. Also, babies have a natural defense mechanism built in to tune out loud noises so they can sleep. Best thing to do is to sleep as much as you can when she sleeps to make sure you are getting enough rest.

If she is sleeping 15 hours straight with out eating then that is not good but as long as she is waking up to eat that is all that counts they grow so much so fast when they are this little and all they need to do that is sleep eat and love Good luck and Cograts soon this stage will end

Just sit back, relax, and enjoy this quiet time while it lasts.
I know how hard that is to hear. I have a 21 month old, and I remember, barely, that I used to worry that all he was doing was sleeping. Now, I wish he would just go to sleep!
As long as he is eating, gaining weight, has wet diapers, then everything is in order.
This is the fastest growth spurt a child goes through, it is much easier for them to sleep through growing, than be awake through it.
Now get ready for the next stages of your baby's life, teething, learning to eat, crawling, walking, talking, becoming more independent with each day.
Like I said, my son is 21 months old, and already thinks he can do everything himself.
I can barely remember him as a newborn.
Time FOR ANOTHER :)

it is very normal for you baby to sleep like that. That is the way they grow. My daughter too was like that for the first month... nothing would wake her up. I was setting my alarm clock every 4 hours because she would not wake up to eat. It is completely normal for her. At least she wakes up when she is hungry. Give her a couple of weeks and she will start staying up for longer periods of time.

wow...well my son slept a lot when I first had him...but he has Down syndrome. I used to have to wake him up to feed him, cuz he'd just keep on sleeping. The doctor checked his blood levels for his thyroid and he actually had an underactive "hypo" thyriod and that was why he slept so long. Kids can also get Mono at any age...My son was two and he got it...so just a few things to ask your pedi about!!! good luck and congrats!!

My son slept a lot too and it is ok dont worry there is most likely nothing wrong because babies need a lot of sleep try putting her on her tummy on a blanket on the floor and give her some toys try to get her to play with them with you it may keep her awake which may help you feel better but as she gets older she will interact more often but just let her sleep if she feels the need to its really ok i pomise. my son fell asleep in his bouncer many times too or hed fall asleep on the blanket but if you give them something to do they are more likely to play

You should be enjoying this!!! lol.. she must just be growing alot.. And when my son was that little, he owuldnt wake up for the world... You could scream and jump around and bang pots and pans, and he wouldnt wake up.... Then when I wanted to take a nap, if I moved wrong he would pop right awake! Have fun being able to get house work done!
