Oil does not have a symbol on the NY Stock Exchange because it is a commodity. It is listed on the NYMEX.

If you want to follow the price of oil, try this link:

http://finance.yahoo.com/futures?u

If you click on "Futures Chain" it will give you the prices of futures all the way out to Dec. of 2012.

The NYSE only list stock for companies, such as the oil companys like Shell and Exxon. "Oil" is not a company. It is a commodity (like gold, wheat, corn, etc). So it is not listed on the NYSE.

Oil trades on the NYMEX.
The root on most quote machines is CL (this is for West Texas Intermediate)
CL1 would be the near future, the one that expires first) - if that doesn't work try CLZ6 (CL is the root - Z is the december contract and 6 is the year)
some cobo of these will get you there CL/Z6 may work - assuming that your quote software is permd. for NYMEX quotes.
