If your hard drive is full, dump the junk you don't use. Keep the bare minimum amount of stuff on there you need and use often. Also,...clean the cache! A lot of people don't know you are supposed to do this! A full cache can slow down your computer too. Run the disk defragmenter after you clean off the hard drive, that will help, and clear up unused and broken files.

These are just simple and free things you can do that might help speed things up.

First just run Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyze.

Hit ctrl alt delete and look at the performance tab If your PF (Page File) is high and the line is not straight you need more ram.

Go to msconfig and services and turn off things you do not need. look at how many things you have running(Processes) in the task manager.

Look down by your clock are there a lot of things there???

If your computer has 512 or 1gb you should be fine with Windows XP

Before getting your hands in your pockets, do a thorough cleanup of your system by cleaning your cache, deleting Internet temp files, cookies and history, then do a check disk and a defrag. Restart your computer and see how it behaves. If this is not the answer, depending upon the age of your PC, start looking into your pockets to see if it would be better to upgrade the old PC or buy a new one.

PC can be slow for number of reasons.
1. removing junk files and bad system registry values- use ccleaner(ccleaner.com) . Use this tool whenever you like. This will free up space and make pc faster.
2. Defrag system once a week.
3. Use adaware se and spybolt antispyware to keep system clean. adwares slow down pc.
4. Use alternate softwares that are low on system resources. Explained below:

Try to remove unwanted programs and use programs that are low on resources. For example, instead of adobe acrobat reader, use foxit reader. Instead of adobe acrobat writer use cute pdf printer(small program that make pdf). Instead of symantec antovirus, use avg antivirus free. Instead of photoshop use gimp or photofiltre. In stead of norton/mcafee internet security, use zone alarm free firewall.

Another option you might try : delete all except last system restore point.
start menu>program>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup>click more tab. choose option to clear system restore point. it will keep last restore point and delete all others.
