Some are sweet and have their parents with them - that's fine by me. I've just had my first knock of the night and this is what I can't stand:
*knock knock*
Me: Hello
Two kids of about 8 standing on my doorstep wearing witches hats: *silence*
Me: "Aren't you supposed to say trick or treat"?
Them: *silence, dumb grin*
Me: "Hang on a minute"
I go and fetch some chocolate eyeballs
Me: "There you go. Happy Halloween"
They look at their chocolate, turn and walk away....in silence.
Oooohhhhhh, where's the manners these days?????

C'mon, give these kids a break, it's not their fault if they don't have good manners and maybe they are doing it for the first time and were too embarassed to say anything.

lol - I agree with you totally! I don't dish out the candy at all if they can't speak. Believe me, once I tell the nasty little toads that, they speak up pretty clearly!!! The only thing worse is the teens - all sullen & awful - they don't usually even bother with a costume anymore. By the time they come around, I pull in the pumpkin & shut off the lights. Good luck - maybe you'll have great little kids all the rest of the evening!!! Happy Halloween!!!!! pumpkin
p.s. - so, how did the rest of the evening go?! We ended up having more goblins than in years past & it was mostly young children, so it was much more fun this year!!!

Trick or Treat, Trick or Treat, give us something good to eat, PLEASE. A bar of chocolate or 10 points will do. Thank You.
When we used to do it as kids, there was a woman up the road who used to make us sing before she would give us a treat!
We just had a gang of 12 kids come round, no costumes, just masks to hide their faces. They take the sweets throwing wrappers on the ground, and instead of going back up the drive they jump over the fence trampling flowers.
So I agree with you, no bloody manners nowadays.

I usually don´t mind if they don´t say trick-or-treat as long as they say thank you. When I lived in England a couple of trick-or-treaters came with their mum and said trick-or-treat but with really long faces and I told them they could take extra sweets since I didn´t think anyone else would be coming and they just took it without saying thank you and the mother didn´t say anything. I think it´s the parents´ fault if they bring their kids up to be rude and disrespectful.

I don't give kids without real costumes candy.
If they're to old to dress up and say "trick or treat" for halloween, there old enough to buy there own bag of candy.
Tell them (VERY ERY POLITLEY)
"I don't give candy to anybody without a real costume. And, you have to say trick or treat. Sorry!"
But don't be to picky with costumes. Once this girl didnt like my costume and didnt give me anything. And get this: I was only 7. I didnt stop crying for three days.

I've always had really sweet, polite kids. Even the older ones (teens) always say thank you. It's too bad when bad ones do come along they spoil things for the rest. Good luck and Happy Halloween! :)

Modern kids eh? You are right though - if they don't play the game give them nothing but a threat that any trick will be dealt with.

Maybe next time you should say, "Right then. Happy Halloween." Then shut the door without giving them anything.

First trick-or-treaters of the night, you say? Are you in Europe?
American trick-or-treaters are much more polite. They all say "trick or treat" and "thank you" unless they are really, really young.
