It's all about demographics.
It used to be the Cosby Show and Family Ties. Then shows like Friends and Sex in the City aired and earned all the money, and the audiences went to them.

We could stand some more family-friendly programming on TV, but unfortunately in today's society that's not what is going to get the ratings.
I personally pretty much watch only "CSI" and "Family Guy," neither which fit that criteria...but they are also immensely popular.
