Check first in ur system properties as to how many RAM do u really have right now.Once that is known, and u still wish to add more, then u need to remove the back cover and add it in an empty slot.If u have a single ram of ,say 128 mb,u cud add another of 128 in the next slot.Alternatively,u cud exchange that old ram for a compact single 256,or two rams of 256 mb each for each slot.
Ideally, windows XP Home and Pro need just 256 mbs to run nearly all applications very comfortably.

first off you need tyo know how much you have, what your max is and if it is internal or external or both. Go to pny.com to use the configurator to check that out. Once you decide what you want to get go purchase it. If you want to install it yourself, there is a single screw on your computer (onthe bottom) that holds a panel closed that covers your ram. (If you open the wrong one don't worry, just cloes it again and you'll be fine). Open it up. There are 2 tabs on either side of the memory. Pull them away from teh stick of memory untill it comes lose. swap the stick of memory. Makes sure you put it in all they way. If you don't your system will not turn on properly (Or at all). If that happens check the memory again that it's in right. If there is a second avalible slot then just put the new stick in the empty slot! :)
Hope this helps!

Personally, I wouldn't go changing things in your laptop by yourself unless you have fidled with them before. Take it to a computer tech. If it just ram it wont take long to put in. I say this because laptops aren't like towers, things are a bit trickier. As for the size, 512mb is considered standard, you can run just about everything on 512. 1 gig is nice if you're running large progams. The more ram, the smother things run. If you're talking games or photoshop/film work, 1 gig is good. Some people like to go all in to their computers, but then they end up having a really nice computer that they spent too much on and don't really need most of it.

Depends on the laptop. Typically there is a door underneath the laptop held on with a screw covering the memory slots. To get more memory you'd want to contact the manufacturer of your laptop so you get the correct type. Maybe you could look up what type you need online and then find it somewhere else for cheaper.
1Gig of RAM is a great amount to have with XP if you have the room for it.
Also you need to look at how much you have now. Lets say you have 512M but your laptop has only two memory slots and you currently have two 256M chips installed to make up the 512M. Well if you wanted to go up to 1G then you'd have to replace both of those with either two 512M chips or replace one of them with a 1G chip (which would then give you 1.2G RAM since one 256M would be left in). See what I'm saying? So you have to look at what you have already; how much room you have for more (slots); and do the math to figure out what you can go up to and how to get there.
The memory type must match - not the brand but the type (speed).

Simple Answer, Anything over 512 works today. There's usually only 2 bays for memory and one is usually already in use with the mem. your using now. If the simm is 512 just double it for 1gig. if it's a 128 or 256 simm I would say replace with 1/512 simm or 1/gig simm. For more choices goto google.com type ram memory in the search box. I double my laptop memory recently with a used 512meg. simm from a local computer store works fine and was half price of a new simm.

There is a removable door on the bottom of your laptop. 512 MB is probably all you will need unless you are running very high end games or running many process at once. Most older laptops have enough spaces for 512,

crucial.com will tell you exactly what you need to get and what you have. It will also tell you how many slots are in use.
But if you want to know how to add RAM, just open your computer, and you should see a stick of RAM and an empty slot (hopefully) next to it.
You should have at least 1 GB RAM, 2 GB is pretty good these days.

first check your laptop spec (how much you can add and what type) from your manufacturer website or crucial.com website.
Then go to dealsea.com or deals2buy.com to find cheapest deal on laptop memory.
In modern times people are crazy about ram but it depends on your use. If you are on Win xp, 512MB is good enough for everyday use. High end use(if you run computational programs etc) might require 1GB.
