I divorced In 1993, and my wife disapeared until about 2003, when all of a sudden she came at me with 18 yrs worth of back child support. How do I get free legal help. I'll never get It paid off In this life time. Are there lawyers out there that can help me get my overall payment reduced.

not sure where you are located....but there is an organization in N. Tx called Fathers for Equal Rights. Me personally, i do not like the organization, b/c during my divorce they helped my ex manipulate the system and our divorce ended up costing over $25k. They still do good work for the parents seeking help for the right reasons. They are there to specifically help those parents that want their kids (for the RIGHT reasons) and need legal help in court. they can help you with filing papers and such. I know that in TX they will allow you to settle on a lower amt of back support, but that is also determined by what the other parent will allow. if they say no i don't want to settle..then its up to judge whether to allow it or not. Since she "disappeared" on you and then comes back...they may be more likely to reduce the amount b/c of the circumstances. However, you will also probably have to have proof that you at least tried to look for them. Otherwise you could be looking at paying the whole amount...

hope this helps & good luck!!

Your wife "disappeared" for 10 years? And the child? You didn't see the child? And did you try to find the child? And where was the support supposed to me sent? Lots of holes here. You can't claim ignorance. You will need to make some sort of payment plan. You can also try to modify the payments you are making if your income has changed. If you have money to pay a lawyer what I just told you, you should have the money to pay back the child support.
