when you edit your file in Flash and save it. You need to save it in .fla in order to have the file editable. .swf is the movie that get generated by the .fla file. .swf, by itself, is not editable by others.

A ".fla" is a -working copy- of a Flash animation file that you are still able to edit using Adobe's (previously Macromedia's) Flash Program.

A ".swf" is a specific type of animated medium to which Flash animations are -published and released- to be viewed using Adobe's (previously Macromedia's) Plugin.
