Standard mouse traps, peanut butter, and patience. A little dab of PB on the trap and you'll have one for sure. When you use poisons they eat it, run off and die. Then they stick up your house becasue they're dead behind the wall.

I had the same problem in my house. I didn't hear the mice, but my cat caught two of them. You have to find where the mice has nested, look under your sink, look for holes in the wall and stuff it with the sealing foam from Home-Depot, look under your stove, or under the range above the oven. Once you find the nest, clean up with Ammonia to get rid of the urine/feces bad odor, and place some mouse bites behind frig and stove, it will be eaten and then, leave the house, because they get sick and try to scape, traps are gross and cruel. A mice looks for food, so don't leave no dirty dishes on the sink, no food out, and overall, put the cat food away at night. Let the cat do the rest of the work. The mice eats the bite and leave. You cat won't eat a sick mice. Be aware, if you cat get them, you may find the death creature or pieces, because cats won't eat the entire rodent. Good Luck, it worked for me.

Traps set up next to walls. Sticky pads (buy at hardware stores) Warfarin in saucers if you have no pets to worry about. Clockwork or mechanical traps.
After you have got rid of mice plug in ultrasonic pest deterrents. (20 to 40 dollars) Place them in open areas such as hallways or any place that does not have furniture in the way obscurring the sound. Will not bother cats or dogs. These work if you have completely rid the house of the pests. they will not return.

First, get like 5 or 10 traps and put cheese in them, put them all over! One is not enough, they are smart. I get the typical smack and kill traps. Some folks would whine about animals being killed, but these are not pets, they are disease carrying rodents that procreate FAST.
Next, go around and fill any holes where they may be getting into your house. Prevention is key.

Have a talk with that cat of yours! Let him/her know that rent and food ain't free! It's gonna have to pick up the slack and get going. I have 3 cats. Got 'em for the moles in my yard. At first, they we're catching 'em left and right. Then they started slackin' off. Caught 'em one night playin' poker with the moles. Had to set 'em straight. Seems they we're losing to the moles and had debts to pay!
Picked up the food bowls, couple days later, moles were on the porch, stiff as a board!
