I am 15 weeks pregnant. I have cut out smoking, pop, and junk food (well most of it :-) and been drinking more water. But I am having a hard time with that one cup on coffee in the morning. I tryed the last few days to go without and i end up being so tired. Is that that bad, to have that one cup of coffee if I am doing everything else okay? Did anyone else drink coffee and have bad-good results? I am going to the doctor in a couple days, i do plan on asking him, just wanting to hear from other people. thanks for the help!

I have three daughters already and I'm pregnant again, with every pregnancy I have never given up that one cup of coffee in the morning. No body on this planet would be able to be around me if I did. One cup a day isn't going to hurt you. I've learned over the past few pregnancies if you listen to everything you hear about allergies, low birth weight, blah blah blah then you'd never eat or drink anything. Honestly, as long as you take care of yourself, eat well, and don't over do it, there's absolutely no reason you shouldn't have your one cup of coffee a day. Good luck!

My Doctor and all the books I have read say that you just need to limit the caffeine - one cup of coffee is not a problem. You can even have a glass of soda once in a while.........you just have to know your limits........ occasional is fine. Go get a book called " what to expect when you are expecting" by Heidi Murkoff. It's the pregnancy bible and will help with all these questions. I refer to it almost daily right now and I am due Feb 2, 2007. Your question as well as many others that you would not expect is in there. It's excellent in describing all of these little things that worry moms and help distinguish when something is "normal" or not.
Good Luck!

First, good for you for giving up up smokes, soda and junk food! It's hard to make a sudden lifestyle change but totally worth it. As far as drinking quite a bit of caffine, the only thing I've read it linked to is an increase in a colic baby, but then they have no idea what causes colic really.

The fact is, if you're not drinking excessive amounts, don't worry about it. If you still feel guilty, try your coffee half decaf and regular. That's what I did, but now the smell of coffee makes me sick! Happy Pregnancy!

Do I have to give up caffeine now that I'm pregnant?
Not necessarily. You can still enjoy your favorite caffeinated drinks as long as you don't overdo it. After years of controversy over the issue, most researchers now believe that, although caffeine does cross the placenta, moderate amounts (less than 300 milligrams a day) won't harm your baby. That's about what you'd get from two or three 8-ounce cups of coffee or six cans of cola. (Keep in mind that the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee varies widely depending on how strong it is, and that your serving size depends on how big your mug is — a typical mug holds about 10 ounces.) Many pregnant women limit their intake even further or cut out caffeine completely. If that seems wise to you, you won't get any arguments from your midwife or doctor.

Caffeine can be a cause for miscarriages, but if you don't have a history, you should be ok. However, it sounds like everyone has this addiction. I would hate to HAVE to have something every morning. Maybe it would be best if you did give it up...you might feel a lot more free. Also, taking drugs (caffeine) to stop your body from feeling things can be dangerous. If you feel tired, it means you need more rest. Don't ignore or mask these symptoms. Try going every other day at first, then make it every 2 days. Try to wean yourself away as best you can. Good Luck! And congratulations on the baby!

Being tired is normal so early in your pregnancy- your body is preparing for your little one- so sleep as much as you possibly can! You will feel tired in your first and third trimester... during the 2nd, you will get a boost of energy and feel like new! So don't fight the tiredness by trying to drink coffee- you really do need the sleep. Also, talk to your doctor and ask him for advice if you simply can't give up the coffee.

You should limit your caffiene intake...but you can actually have up to three cups a day and not worry. I read in pregnancy magazine a list of things that are not worth worrying about...and that was one of them. 3 cups of coffee or 6 cans of soda. Coloring your hair. Having fillings put in your teeth. ETC. ETC.
Think about the things that some women do while they are pregnant.... a cup of coffee is fine!

My doctor said you can have 3-4 cups a day. I play it safe and only drink 1 cup a day plus the occasional afternoon diet coke.

I never ate fast food or drank soda/alcohol/drugs/smoked but I couldn't give up my coffee. At home I had my regular cup with my husband, but anytime I went out I would order decaf. My5 month old daughter is not hyper or affected in any way. Drink Up!
