My debit card info has been obtained by people in Tokyo, Japan (dunno how) and they made transactions worth 1500$ over the weekend. My bank called me y day morning after placing a softhold on the account. After talking to me, they confirmed that it was not something I did, they did issue a provisional credit to my account. I would like to close my account with this bank because I feel insecure. Can I do that? Does the bank has a right to deny my request to close the account because they have a dispute being investigated? Thanks very much.

I have 4500$ in my account. As the disputed amount is for 1500$, I should be able to write checks for the other 3000$ which can be deposited in my other account right. As they are monitoring my account, do you think they will stop them as well. I dont think so, but the whole thing has shaken me up. The bank client support sent me a fax with documents I need to sign, notarize and fax back. I am doing that right now but still some how I am not comfortable banking with them. As some one said, this can happen even if I go to a diff bank.
B T W How long does these kind of dispute process take and what if the bank is not able to trace the baddies in Tokyo.
