For as long as I can remember my daughter has had a very red bottom, even before she was eating food. Could she have an allergy to something I eat that is being passed through my breast milk? If a red bottom is the only symptom is it a big deal?

does your daughter have a yeast infestion on her bottom? if she does you will need to take her to her doctor to get medication to clear up her rash. yeast infections are common among all babies and cause a sore, red even a bleeding rash to the bottom. only a prescription med can fix this. if your daughter is under 4 months or so, and you know this is not a yeast infection, try cleaning her bottom with water, pat dry, then leave her bottom open to the air, under your suprevision, because we tell parents not to put baby to sleep on her tummy;then while she sleeps she can get air circulation to her bottom, which usually helps most normal baby rashes. also use a cream, such as desitan, or a&d, or balmex, or if you have another good baby diaper rash ointment, use that. the ones with zinc oxide will provide more protection during times she must stay in her diaper. bathing your babies bottom once a day or more is also very soothing and healing ,stay away from perfumed soaps until her bottom is healed, because they can cause pain to her bottom, and also she could be allergic to one of these. if she does have an allergy to what she is drinking, or eating, you can try the elimination diet, if you breast feed, try eliminating, first milk products, and if you see an improvement, talk to her doctor about this. you can also try eliminating eggs, as this can be a common allergy. please talk to your babies doctor about your worries about allergies. i am an r.n., working with babies the last 15 years. if your baby is allergic to something that is causing her red bottom, you still need to treat her bottom by not letting her wear a wet or soiled diaper any longer than a few minutes, as this will cause a red bottom to get worse. always use an ointment or cream that your doctor recommends. another idea, my 2nd daughter was allergic to all disposable diapers, she got red everywhere the diaper touched. i tried other brands, but none worked. i had to finally use cloth diapers, and then her rash went away . hopefully your duaghter just has a normal baby diaper rash, but it sounds like more to me. approach the doctor about her rash problem, and ask him/her if they think it could be a yeast infection. these respond well to the prescription cream meds. some little ones don't seem to get rid of thier rashes until potty trained, but this is a long time for a little one to have a sore butt. try all the washing/bathing/zinc oxide preps for her bottom, use hypoallergenic diapers if you can find them, and then talk to the doc about poss. allergies also. some babies do get terrible rashes from certain formulas they are on, and a formula change can dramatically inprove this, this is an allergy to a certain formula which causes the rash. you say she has had this rash even before she was on any food. so also approach this idea with the doc, if yeast infection is ruled out. hope baby gets better, it would make any one baby or not, cranky, to go around with a sore butt!happy baby trails to you. you must be a good mommy to care so much as to ask what to do. i hope this helps you know where to start. good day.

I have severe allergies to all citrus fruit, oatmeal, eggs and whole wheat. As a child, I was severely allergic to cows milk. I outgrew that allergy in my 20's. Yes, you can 'outgrow' allergies. I'm 50 and my food allergies started at the age of 5. About 8 years ago, I ate some BBQ sauce that I didn't know had lemon in it. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days! A word of caution: Many commerically prepared foods may have ingredients NOT listed on the label. By law, the manufacturers do not have to list an ingredient less than 2% by volume! Lemon was not listed on the label of BBQ sauce, but after investigating it, I found out that yes indeed it did have lemon, but a very small amount..........too small to list on the label!

It could be something you ate that is coming out in her milk. It could be the brand of diapers or wipes you are using. I had really good luck with red bottoms when I started using this certain kind of powder. It's Gold Bond BABY powder. Not the stuff you use for your feet. It's cornstarch with some clay in it. This keeps their bottoms really, really dry. Much better than the regular powder that is mostly just cornstarch and fragrance. It worked so well for us that the daycare workers that had babies started to use it at home on their own kids.

If you think food allergies are a possibility, request a blood allergy test, when you receive the results take a look at think if it could be things your eating... My son is highly allergic to milk.. He gets hives if it even touches his skin. He's still breastfed, if I drink too much he breaks out... Good Luck!

You're probably best off asking your pediatrician but I know from experience that babies can be allergic to something that a breastfeeding mom is eating.

I recently heard from another mom that her daughter had been so allergic to something that she became allergic to her own poop/urine and essentially had a diaper rash for two straight months. I've also heard moms in my MOMS club talk about babies getting too much fruit (acids) so that they end up with diaper rash.

If it's food allergy, the redness won't be limited to just the bottoms, trust me. It's most likely you don't change her enough, or not fast enough after she poops. Poops mixed with urine is very acidic, and sensitive bottoms can be irritated easily. Put Desitin on her bottm every time after change.

I noticed this on my 6 month old when I used cheap diapers. I now hardly ever buy cheap diapers.
