My kids have gone out trick or treating tonight and they will be pleased with any nice things they get given, including fruit. They will also say thankyou.
They know they are lucky to get anything as this is not supposed to be begging. Any houses who don;t want to take part round here tend to put a note on the door saying no to trick or treaters and this is respected.
I hate the attitude that people should have to give the kids something, especially when they knock on the door with no costume at all and an attitude.
Fruit is as much of a treat as sweets. Enjoy.

Most kids won't appreciate 'odd' foods, no matter how tasty- and most moms won't allow fresh fruit or anything not in a factory wrapper.
I think I'd stop over at the local healthier food store- Whole Foods, Wild Oats, the vegetarian market, etc. and look for some wrapped snack things you can use- mini-granola bars, fruit- or honey-based treats, etc.
Another option would be a small toy or something from the local party supply store, Orietnal Trading Company (or Nobbies), etc. Just make sure they are age appropriate.

Hi there. I think you've had a really good idea, and that the spirit of the idea is a good one, but unfortunately I don't think it'll really work. Like you say, they are probably chav kids, and as such will probably end up throwing the fruit at your house in disgust that you haven't supplied them with sweets...I probably think it'll be a waste of your money. I commend your wanting to do something different, tho, and trying to do something better than just hand out teeth rotting sweeties!

Oh come on and be realistic!
Whatever Jamie Oliver and his mates say kids will ALWAYS prefer sweets over fruit.
I imagine they won't appreciate it in the slightest!
I'm giving them fun size chocolate bars because they love them and they are yummy. Yeah sweets can make you fat. But only if you eat loads and loads of them and don't get any exercise. I ate sweets as a kid and have never been fat or had health problems as I ate well otherwise and was always very active. Its up the the parents to make sure the kids get balance int he rest of their diet and fitness.
This crap about "banning" kids from sweets is nonsense. everything in moderation is the key.

Hmm. A lot of people think fruit is unsafe bc you could stick pins or razors into it (urban myth+added fear that makes H'ween even more fun). So you might be wasting your money.
When I was a kid some people put pennies in a little piece of aluminum foil and passed that out. So each kid gets about 10 cents. Or maybe you could pass out peanuts or fruit roll-ups, anything that is pre-wrapped.

It will definitely be appreciated by all the kids wondering which house to egg and TP tonight!! Plan on a clean-up crew tomorrow if you offer freakin' FRUIT.
And, BTW, it isn't up to you to decide if someone's kid is too fat. No one is forcing you to offer any sort of treat. If you're just going to be an a-hole about the whole thing, why even bother?

Total waste of money because no parent is going to let their child eat fruit from somebody's house - it's too easy to tamper with. I can't believe you'd discriminate against the fat kids, anyway. That just sucks . . . it's the wrong attitude & not in the spirit of Halloween. Lighten up -
11/1/2006 Okay, Halloween is over - So, what did you do for the fat kids? I hope you didn't treat them any differently than you did any other child . . .

i would be reluctant to take something like that for my kids. I mean something that's open. I would do prepackaged pretzels, animal crackers or raisins. They have healthy snack out for Halloween now, and its probably the same price as what you would spend on fruit.

Adopt 'siege mentality'.
Close curtains. Stay quiet. Carry a big stick.
Do not buy into American big business corporate garbage.
Yanks are the fattest people in the world by miles.
No wonder.
Give them nothing.
