Should be able to hear the bearings, If not, try yanking on the pully assembly to see if its loose. and of course the car overheating, but could be the stat too

I have this auto stethiscope with a long prong on it. I can but the prong near the bearing and hear how it sounds. You can tell if a bearing is going out, compare it to the bearing at the end bell of your alternator.

look under your car and check to see if the "weep" hole is leaking coolant, the hole is under your water pump u should be able to see it with a flashlight drippin coolant or water, that means your bearings are out and time 4 a new pump!
