Usually black because of the age. But this color can be very depressing. I say use bright colors or maybe a combination of his favorite colors. There is no set rule for birthdays.

Yes....black and white!!!
Black because you're over the hill, and party stores, and kmart & walmart have lots of You're over the hill now....things to buy,

White - because it is the beginning of a new half century...with lots of wisdom and experience.

Have a great time....and I celebrated my 50ieth..6 years ago...and I'm still happy!

definitely black balloons; a black cake with "over the hill' on it; gold, silver, and diamond are for anniversaries, not birthdays
