In High School of College during football season they have one night (HS) or day (College) when alumni are expected to come to town to see the team play. The game is an "at home" game. (Some times games are away. That is played at another school.)
So "Home Coming" refers to the alumni coming back. Then the school elects a young man to be King, but not always. And a young woman to be the Homecoming Queen. The Queen get all dressed up in a formal gown (and the King, if there is one, in a tux) and ride on the back of a car in the Home Coming parade. This happen once a year, in the fall.
PS. Our "football" is not the same as what you call 'football' (soccer) in Europe.

In High School, they have a dance called Homecoming. All the students vote on a girl student in the school, that they would want to be Homecoming Queen. There is also a King. At the dance, theyre usually put up on a small stage, in their chairs, just like royalty...lol
They also do this for a dance called Prom. Its an even bigger thing. These are just traditions weve done in America for many yrs.
